The human body has two adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys. The adrenal glands are the main component in the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal-Thyroid-Gonadal Axis. When adrenal dysfunction is present it can cause weight gain/loss, sleep issues, bone loss, muscle loss, fat gain, low energy, depression, anxiety, night sweats, hot flashes, sugar/carb cravings, memory issues, compromised immunity, headaches, irritable bowel, and elevated blood pressure.
Similar to thyroid testing, traditional medicine is very limited in the testing of adrenal health and many times completely leaves it out as the root cause of a patient’s problem. Too often a patient is diagnosis with obesity, metabolic syndrome, low testosterone, PCOS, hypothyroidism, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, PTSD, anxiety, or bipolar when they are really having an adrenal issue.
To get an idea of adrenal functionality we look at cortisol levels taking throughout the day. Cortisol has a cyclic wave pattern each day. Only looking at a single value at one point in the day does not provide a complete picture of a patient’s daily cortisol wave. Additionally, we look at other elements that cortisol affects and is affected by. Such as DHEA, Pregnenolone, Sex Hormones, Melatonin, Medications, Diet, Stress, and Environmental Toxins.
